Nothing on this page is legal advice. Talk to a lawyer if you need legal advice.
Alex Schroeder, the guy who runs this site, lives in Switzerland. If necessary, we’ll therefore be using Swiss law to resolve issues.
Almost everything we say and publish is covered by copyright in the various jurisdictions we live in. How does this affect the wiki? Here are some thoughts.
- We’re not using, copying, or distributing other people’s works. We’re just linking to it. Thus copyright and licensing terms of the pages we link to don’t usually concern us. This does not absolve us from other legal obligations (no slander, no insults, no trademark infringements, no spilling of trade secrets, and so on).
- Whatever we do on this site does not affect the copyright of the content we link to.
- In some jurisdictions links to certain material may be illegal. In some jurisdiction authorities may claim copyright infringement and ask us to take down links or go to court without having to present actual proof. This is unfortunate but it has nothing to do with copyright and licensing. Anybody publishing stuff online runs this risk.
- Sometimes it is possible to claim copyright on the organization of material that is itself not worthy of copyright protection. One could therefore claim that the order of the links on these pages is protected by copyright. Since links get added and moved around on an individual basis, it would seem very difficult indeed to claim this.
- For all intents and purposes you can probably treat the collection of links as not protected by copyright and thus requiring no licensing for you to use, copy or distribute.
- Any comments and ratings in the range of one or two sentences are probably not individual enough to be worthy of protection. This is where it gets tricky, however. As soon as there is a recognizable, individual touch to a comment or a review, you should consider it protected by copyright. If this matters to you, consider it licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0).
