What makes space travel work?
- Different star systems use different types of drives. These might be called Hex-engines or Crystal-Drives or whatever else. But the general guideline here is- the larger ships are slower by far. Plucky mercenaries and raiders can easily run away from or avoid any large warship. Hiding from a large warship is also not difficult- because their sensors aren’t great at picking up smaller craft.
- Gigantic craft can warp between systems by using a warp, jump, hyperspace, or space-folding technique. Each is different but the basic deal is they all take at least an hour and must remain motionless before a jump is made.
- Every ‘linked’ system has at least one and perhaps several space-based and even planet-based stargates. They transport people and ships between systems and planets. These can be attuned by anyone with skill at manipulating the stargates, and can be done via hand contact, psionically, or via a special radio-band. Stargates can even be set to ‘random’. Only ships under 300 square tons (or so) can use stargates. Gigantic ships have to travel under their own power.
