Initiative refers to a system for determining turn order in a game, often for conflicts.

Not all games rely on an initiative system. Some simply ask the GM to manage [[Spotlight?]].

Initiative can be determined via a variety of methods. The most common involves a simple die roll, highest (or lowest) going first, with the order preserved round-to-round. Some variations include:

Some systems use card draws or pulling tokens from a bag, with the cards/tokens representing either the PCs or the enemies. These systems may also include an end-of-round card/token, which, when drawn, forces all cards back in the deck or tokens back in the bag to be shuffled/mixed, thus resetting the initiative and resulting in the possibility of rounds where characters skip their turn.
