The rest of the night passes uneventfully, Gaul casts a spell that allows him to speak to the troll in the Morning, I need a spell like that. He says that there are Fire Giants on the other side of the mountain, His name is Grak's Finger. We are now introduced. Hurray! I give him 1000cp so he isn’t “without” treasure. That seems important to him, as we walked we had to talk Jorl out of starting a scorpion Farm in a sack. He really wanted to get this started, I felt bad stopping him, but carrying around a sack o Scorpions seems like both a bad and a great idea! Make camp for the night. Been trying to establish a set of hand signals to help communicate with Grok. I then teach him to count his copper (I figure it will help keep him distracted). Good thing because while on FIRE Mountain, that we need,………you guessed it,……more fire,……..because,…………no real answer there. I kept Grok from freaking out and we went back to counting copper, I’m trying to get him to 3. Will work on getting to 4 tomorrow. We got attacked by a Wyvern in the night. It was trying to carry off the Quaal that Dinkgus was riding. Dinkgus had apparently tied himself to the quaal by his hands,……..he’s a caster mind you. The Wyvern stung Grok and he went down like a sack of potatoes, after blinding and the thing and finally bringing it down. Canis ripped out it’s eyes giving the killing blow. We decided to skin it and Grok had to wait to eat, he came too shortly after the fight.
In trying to find the Wyvern lair, Canis (in bird form) found a cave of Fire Giants, they where working with fire Salamanders (?) doing,……..stuff? Canis, Stohagan, and Dink went to check out the cave, I’m a bit fuzzy on what happened but I saw the after math and it was epic! 4 dead giants and 20,000 or more coins. I had to use some of the dust I got from the flying Horse Fucker, that hurt a bit. But we got away, we got back and decided to move camp and head back to the ships.
Blessing from the Gaze Above allows Gaul Stonedog to speak the Troll tongue for a bit. It calls itself GraksFinger. He accents both syllables of Chesty’s name with a heavy sigh between each. ‘Rolling fire’ chased it’s tribe from their lair, which it claims is bare of treasure. It speaks of an old man cave, who does not know Troll words. The old man cave should be on the other side mountain of Fire Mountain (SW face) where there are many giants. Trolls take days of walking since they ‘no go top mountain, much rolling fire’ It agrees to lead the party the long way around the fire mountain so we can investigate these lairs.
After a days trek we make camp. Stohagan Wisedrifter sends Owlbert on an aerial reconnaissance about our camp which Gaul Stonedog mirrors on foot. Gaul Stonedog investigates a steaming fissure which matches GaksFinger’s lair description. It is swamped by an active lava flow. The night’s rest is interrupted by an errant Wyvern attempting to abscond one of our Quall’s. The Wyvern’s tail tags GaksFinger, killing it. Dinkgus Fastcrank is almost lost with the Quall since he lashed himself to it before falling asleep. As the quall is struck dead by the Wyvern, Chesty Puller enlarges the carcass, slowing down the Wyvern’s flight. This allows Campion Renalan, Canis Mallory and Gaul Stonedog a chance to save the quall’s life with spells. Blinded and repeatedly struck by weapons and eagle claws, the Wyvern dies.
Eventually GraksFinger recovers and aids Jorl Benthal with skinning the Wyvern carcass. Chesty Puller and Stohagan Wisedrifter supervise the reaping of organs and body parts for spell reagents. Renalan pockets the Wyvern’s feet. The harvesting takes the remainder of the night so when the sun rises the party decides to rest in place so the caster may rest. Before resting, Chesty Puller cast Fly on Gaul Stonedog who alights among the circling vultures. Failing to entice one closer with Wyvern steaks, Gaul Stonedog swoops upon a vulture securing it within a large sack. It is subdued and prepared for ritual sacrifice.
As the party collects itself later that afternoon, Canis Mallory decides to reconnoiter the peaks above us to validate GaksFinger’s testimony. His first sortie discovers a collection of humanoids toiling alongside slithering half snake men in a section of the caldera capping Fire Mountain. He notices their is an improved path descending from the south western rim of the caldera to the area the clothed and armored humanoids are laboring with the snake men. Following the path over the opposite slope he notices a gaping maw in the landscape far below the rim on the far south western slope of Fire Mountain. Based on Canis Mallory’s report, Gaul Stonedog sacrifices the captured vulture to the Gaze above, divining that within lair several powerful creatures guarding rich treasure. An assault on the place would unsettle a contra death augury power. Enthusiastically, the party organizes a raiding party of Canis Mallory, Dinkgus Fastcrank and Stohagan Wisedrifter.
Canis Mallory conveys himself since he still wears the form of a giant eagle. Dinkgus Fastcrank and Stohagan Wisedrifter use fly spells to make the first leg of the trip. Unseen the three fly to the opposite side of the caldera rim and approach the maw on the far slope unseen. Using stealth and the fact that they are invisible allows the three to slink into the depths and discover a quartet of 12 foot tall giants, two female and two male adolescents. Dinkgus Fastcrank opens hostilities by surprising the giants with a color spray. Stohagan Wisedrifter follows with a torrent of an ice storm. The adolescents fall upon the two but one is intercepted by Canis Mallory now in human shape setting Desert Thorn against a charge. Both Stohagan Wisedrifter and Dinkgus Fastcrank survive blows from the adolescents. Stohagan drops the four in their tracks by launching a forking lightning bolt that sizzles once and again after bouncing off the wall behind the giants. The fury of the strike collaterally damages the giants treasure chest but that doesn’t deter the winners from collecting as much as they can before returning to the camp.
Dinkgus Fastcrank organizes their return trip by collecting some tokens of the treasure, stashing a portion away from the lair and offering his magical fly to ferry the other two. Stohagan Wisedrifter enlarges the fly so all three and some loot can escape. Their return is greeted with cheers. Chesty Puller and Dingkus Fastcrank return to the lair to collect the remaining treasure via Chesty’s hole. As they escape with the last of the shineys they are assaulted by the giants that spent the day in the caldera with the snake men. Chesty Fuller sprinkles some of his Dust of Disappearance on the three as Dinkgus Fastcrank calls on the Gaze above for exceptionally good fortune.
Expecting an immediate reaction from the giants on the opposite side of Fire Mountain, the party quickly decides to return to the fleet. Dinkgus and Chesty fly away on the fly to secret the loot further away as Gaul Stonedog covers the ambulators tracks. We will trek easterly for the rest of the day.
