Favor Trade (Power Investiture & Divine Magic)

Deities in Imperia rely on the “Favor Trade” as the source of their power. The average follower pledges themselves to a deity or an organization dedicated to a deity and in the process grant that deity a “favor”. These favors are rarely called upon, rather they are marks of loyalty from individuals to divine beings, with their accumulation increasing the cosmic power of a deity. Each deity has a creed that dictates their general goals and philosophy, a follower is expected to adhere to the creed, lest their favor is called upon. In exchange for favors, followers fall under the protection of their chosen deity, who may provide boons and blessings indirectly to individuals, communities, or organizations.

Those who prove themselves above the masses may directly receive divine power, marking them as an adherent; often this associates them with vested leadership or heralds- though this is not necessarily true. A shrewd deity will just as often leverage the possibility of divine investment as a reward for those who perform well in spreading their influence, accumulating favors, or simply enacting their direct will. Deities of great power are content to sit on their trove of favors, whereas those of lesser power encourage and reward adherents who take an active role in bringing more followers to the flock.

On its own a favor is unusable- its raw cosmic power must be molded by a deity. The divine power lent to an adherent is a composite made from portions of several favors. A follower’s passing does not dissipate a favor already owed, it is through this property that deities grow their troves over the course of centuries. In theory, any entity that has access to a supply of usable divine power, the influence to acquire followers/adherents, and the capability to shape cosmic energy, can become a deity. In practice, the means to any of these three components is effectively unknown, as no entity has ever revealed the secrets of the Favor Trade.

A follower is a member of the flock, an adherent is a member with power investiture. An adherent’s choice of deity determines the limit of their Power Investiture. Each level of PI contains ten spells that points can be spent on at any time, as well as five spells locked behind performing a conformity. Each deity has a different conformity, each time a conformity is performed the adherent may spend points to gain/increase the level of a locked spell once.
